Reception [edit]
Unsettled Ground received starred reviews from Library Journal [2] and Booklist,[3] too as positive reviews from Publishers Weekly,[4] NPR,[five] Los Angeles Times,[6] The Times Literary Supplement,[7] The Wall Street Periodical,[8] The Guardian,[nine] and Shelf Awareness.[ten]
Writing for Booklist, Poornima Apte wrote, "Fuller ... paints a devastatingly haunting pic of abject poverty, especially in her descriptions of the houses they dwell in, each of which becomes a character in its own right. This tale offers a remarkable peek into how the embrace of family can completely smother other aspects of life. Nevertheless, human ingenuity persists."[3] Shelf Awareness'southward Alice Martin echoed Apte's sentiment, stating, "Fuller'due south power to arts and crafts nuanced and affecting characters."[10]
NPR's Ilana Masad called Unsettled Footing "a terribly beautiful book," noting that "although its premise may seem tranquillity, information technology is full of dramatic twists and turns correct upwards until its moving, cute end."[5]
Kirkus Reviews provided a mixed review, saying, "At once unsettling and hopeful, [Unsettled Ground] checks all the boxes of an engrossing mystery, but it falters in its pacing. And when the book'south big dark secret is finally exhumed, the reader feels just every bit cheated as its protagonists do."[eleven]
Practiced Housekeeping named Unsettled Ground one of the best novels of the year.[12]
